Corona Virus

Corona viruses

are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal corona viruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS-CoVSARS-CoV, and now with this new virus (named SARS-CoV-2).

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is a betacoronavirus, like MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV.  All three of these viruses have their origins in bats. The sequences of recent corona virus outbreak is from an animal reservoir.

Early on, many of the patients in the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, China had some link to a large seafood and live animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. Later, a growing number of patients reportedly did not have exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread. Person-to-person spread has been reported outside China as well. Chinese officials report that sustained person-to-person spread in the community is occurring in China. In addition, other destinations have apparent community spread, meaning some people have been infected who are not sure how or where they became infected.

Illness Severity

Both MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV have been known to cause severe illness in people. The complete clinical picture with regard to COVID-19 is not fully understood. Reported illnesses have ranged from mild to severe, including illness resulting in death.

There are ongoing investigations to learn more. This is a rapidly evolving situation and information will be updated as it becomes available.

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

CDC believes at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses.

Analyzing Karachi’s Emergency Response Services

Scaring and Eye-Opener Facts:

It was disheartening, eye-opener but very interesting & informative read in the last few days. The #research was conducted in #Karachi with public & private #hospitals partnership. The results are:

Refresh CPR training

1- Only 1 in a 100 people in #Pakistan survive a #cardiac arrest, one of the deadliest types of #medical #emergencies, according to the findings.

2- 7 out of 10 cardiac arrests happen at #home, a statistic that points to the importance of family members and #bystanders being #trained to provide immediate #CPR to their loved ones and community members.

3- They also found that immediate CPR by bystanders only took place in 1 in 10 cases: a statistic that greatly increases the likelihood of #death.

Be the Beat

4- Karachi, which is estimated to need 200 fully-equipped #ambulances, has just 60 ambulances that can prevent #mortality from cardiac arrest.

5- Researchers also noted that 93% of ambulance staff DID NOT CONDUCT CPR on the way to #hospital.

6- They also admitted that pre-hospital care and #emergency response services are still in their initial early stages in Karachi.

7- #Survival rates from cardiac arrests in the developing world are at least ten times higher than Pakistan.

8- Every home across the country should have a person trained in conducting CPR.

CPR Debrief

9- They also emphasized on the telephone-CPR initiatives, where helpline operators advised laymen on how to perform CPR, also helped boost the chances of survival.

10- Furthermore, they highlighted that #Pakistan should also set up a single 911 type number that will #help #dispatch an ambulance with #defibrillators and #paramedics #trained in CPR in cases of cardiac arrest.

Where do you stand, if you live in Karachi?
