Modified Recovery (HAINES) Position

Today we will update you on “Modified Recovery Position” which is named as “HAINES”; High Arm IN Endangered Spine.

As we all know that there are lot of conditions associated before to take decision to put victim in recovery position. As a general rule a victim should not be moved, especially if you suspect, from the victim’s position or the nature of the injury, that the victim may have a spinal injury BUT as a real time situation dictates you to do so in a way your or victim’s life in in danger then place the victim in a modified High Arm IN Endangered Spine (HAINES) recovery position. The step by step guide to do so is:

1:- The casualty’s arm should be fully raised by ‘rotating it outwards’ to ensure it is beside the casualty’s head. This is achieved automatically by ensuring the palm is facing upwards.

2:- The casualty’s upper limb to be placed across the chest, with fingers pointing to the opposite shoulder.

3:- Bend the casualty’s nearest lower leg at the knee.

4:- The rescuer’s hand is then placed under the hollow of casualty’s neck and head to provide stabilisation.

5:- The casualty is then carefully rolled away by the rescuer, by simultaneously pushing on the casualty’s nearest shoulder with the first aider’s forearm of the stabilising hand and the casualty’s flexed knee ensuring large casualty’s do not roll into the prone position.

6:- Whilst still supporting the head and neck, place the hand of the casualty’s upper arm ‘Palm down’, placing the fingers under the Armpit of the underarm. As soon as the hand from the upper arm is placed into the armpit, ensure the Forearm is flat on the surface and is position at 90 degrees to the body. When the casualty is positioned on their side, check the airway and if required, clear with the face turned slightly downwards to permit drainage from the mouth.

We look forward to your comments (if any).

Burns – the latest and best advice for treating a burn

A burn is an injury to skin, and possibly underlying tissues, caused by exposure to extreme heat, chemicals, or electrical contact. Burns are extremely common, painful and potentially life-changing injuries. Burns frequently become infected and scarring from burns is often disfiguring and permanent.

Who is at risk:

A third of adult burns are work-related. Thus, those working in fields where one is exposed to flames, steam, hot objects or chemicals should make sure they are taking all the safety precautions and first aid care. If you are unsure about first aid and the law, do participate in any of our first aid session to know more about the regulatory requirements, compliance and proven first aid care.

Stats from UK: British hospitals treat 13,000 burns injuries each year. 200 people die from burns related injuries each year.

Stats from Pakistan: 80% child burn cases reported in 2018 were caused by tea related spills.

70% of all paediatric burn’s incidents occur in children under 4 years old. Children’s skin is more sensitive and thinner than an adults and a small child can still receive serious burns from a cup of tea that has been made for more than 10 minutes. It is vital that you take additional measures to reduce the risk of burns in children. Learning a proper first aid care help participants understand the initial management and detailed care for types of burns can help to reduce the damage that may occur and allow for more effective healing.

The Do’s and Don’ts in case of scald burn injury :

Don’ts

DO NOT use very cold water or ice.
DO NOT apply ointments, butter, creams, oil etc.

Do’s

DO cool the burn under running tap water for 20 Minutes.
DO see a doctor if recommended by the first aid care provider.

Strains, Sprains, Dislocations and Fractures – Are you trained to care for?

Bones, muscles, and joints give the body shape, allow movement, and protect vital internal organs. There are four different types of injuries affecting bones, muscles, and joints.

Strains;

Sprains;

Dislocations; and

Fractures.

We all know someone who has experienced a fracture, sprain, strain or dislocation. From skiing, slipping whilst running round the side of a swimming pool, fall from height, tripping on the same level, trampolining … or just falling badly, they happen all the time, and they are tricky injuries to avoid. Whilst fractures and sprains are extremely common, it is difficult to know whether you have broken a bone or just have a soft tissue injury.

This is where practical first aid courses helps in great deal to learn how to offer care to offer relief, alleviate suffering and saving lives. FATSAL offers most extensive first aid courses where focus is on adult learning approach where the core knowledge content is provided using scenario-based video segments, followed by demonstration of skills and the opportunity for instructor-facilitated student skill practice. The role-play from different perspectives fosters self-discovery and naturally increases the number of repetitions, helping students integrate both knowledge and skill performance.

The goal of this training program is to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond in an emergency to offer care, alleviate sufferings and Save Lives!

Learning Objective:

Learn to differentiate between a strain, sprain, fracture, and dislocation

Learn to describe the signs and symptoms of a musculoskeletal injury

Learn to recognize and provide first aid treatment for a swollen, painful, deformed limb

Learn the importance of an appropriate assessment of the distal extremity

Learn the appropriate care for a patient with a musculoskeletal injury

Learn the purpose and methods for manual stabilization of a skeletal injury

Learn how to splint a swollen, painful, deformed limb.

Do’s and Don’ts of Medicine

Your loved one may be taking prescription medicine as well as over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and food supplements. Both prescription and OTC medicine can cause serious problems if not taken correctly. Be very careful to give medications exactly the way the health-care provider advises.

To be safe, don’t change medication dosage without first checking with the health-care provider. You and your loved one should learn about the medicines s/he takes and know when to take them and their possible side effects. Below are some of the DON’TS of Medication.

DON’T have your loved one “make up” a dose if s/he misses one unless advised to do so by the health-care provider.

DON’T give your loved one medicine prescribed for another person.

DON’T give any medicine to you loved one without the health-care provider’s approval.

DON’T change your medicine schedule at your own.

DON’T store or combine different kind of medicines in the same bottle/container.

DON’T stop you medication without discussing it with your health-care provider.

DON’T crush or chew tablets or pills unless the health-care provider or pharmacist says it is okay.

DON’T mix alcohol or any other drink (dissolved syrups, beverages, cold water, etc) and medicine unless the health-care provider says it is okay. Some drugs may not work well or may make your loved one sick if taken this way.

Pharmacists are a great resource for medication questions. The pharmacist will be able to advise you about potential medication interactions.
