World First Aid Day

World First Aid Day is an annual opportunity to highlight the importance of first aid around the globe as an act of humanitarian empowerment and as a key component of a wider resilience approach; it is an occasion to reach a wider public audience and try to change the way the world thinks about first aid. September 12 is World First Aid Day for year 2020. It was instituted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 2000 and has been celebrated each year ever since.

First aid training provides more than the knowledge and skills to effectively respond – it also provides the confidence to act when needed. First Aid to Save a Life offers a wide variety of first aid, basic life support and CPR training courses, empowering general public and professionals to act on, prevent, and manage life’s emergencies.

First aid does not necessarily require any prior knowledge and can involve improvisation. However, if the person performing first aid doesn’t know what they are doing, they might hurt instead of helping. That is why governments and all global organizations encourage people to undergo basic first aid training or at least educate themselves using any available reliable sources.

Recent polling by the Red Cross shows that nearly 40 per cent of people say they have been in an emergency situation where they have had to perform first aid; however, only 18 per cent are currently certified. This World First Aid Day, FATSAL is calling on all Pakistanis and global citizens to ensure they have the skills needed to save lives when an emergency happens.

Millions of people are hurt or killed by injuries every year due to inadequate response or lack of timely assistance. Taking immediate action and applying the appropriate techniques, while waiting for professional help, can considerably reduce deaths and injuries, and the impact of disasters and everyday emergencies. First aid is not a replacement for emergency services. It is a vital initial step for providing effective and swift action that helps to reduce serious injuries and improve the chances of survival.

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for the ages of 1 and 44. Having the skills to act immediately in an emergency situation can help save lives and reduce the impact of injury, but the knowledge also helps prevent injuries in the first place.
